DEDHAM BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION PROGRAMS

Not sure which program is right for your child?
Both Town and Travel Basketball offer great opportunities for Dedham kids to learn the game, build confidence, and have fun. The key difference is the level of competition and commitment. Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison to help you decide:

Dedham Basketball: Town vs. Travel Program Comparison

  Town Basketball Travel Basketball
Purpose Fun, teamwork, and community; all skill levels welcome. Competitive play and advanced skill development.
Grades K–12  (boys and girls) 3–8 (boys and girls)
Tryouts No tryouts — all registered players placed on a team. Tryouts required; players must attend at least one (both recommended). Not all guaranteed a spot.
Season Early December – late February Practices begin in November; games run December – early March.
Practices 1 practice per week for 1-2nd graders, none for 3-12. 2 practices per week
Games 1 game per week, all in Dedham 1–2 games per weekend (home & away across Metrowest towns).
Coaches Parent volunteers (training and support available). Parent volunteers selected by DBA Travel Committee; must apply annually.
Competition Level Recreational; focus on learning and fun. Competitive; teams play in the Metrowest Basketball League.
Cost $135/player; includes team jersey.  (Family max of $270) $380; covers league entry, refs, gym rentals, first time uniforms  (any uniforms after that is an additional fee).
Dual Participation Yes — players can do Town and Travel. Yes — many Travel players also play in Town.
If Not Selected No Tryout for town, all registered players, play. Encouraged to play Town to continue building skills.
Parent Involvement Coaches and referees are always needed — volunteers are essential! Volunteer assistant coaches and team support welcome; head coaches chosen by committee.

Both programs are designed to give Dedham kids the chance to play basketball, learn teamwork, and have fun — whether they’re just starting out or looking for more competitive play!
